Carl Albert Leary

  General Notes:

Carl was the first person in his family to graduate from High School. He graduated from Flint High School in 1942.

Carl joined the Marines when he was 19 and served in New Zealand and fought in the Pacific islands during WWII. He was an Iwo Jima survivor serving in the 3rd Marine Division that backed up the Division that raised the flag over Iwo Jima. His daughters, Terry and Jill, were able to take Carl to the WWII Memorial dedication in 2004. He was the featured Marine that year in the Flint Journal along with others from the Navy and Army. Carl was photographed wearing his dungaree jacket with shrapnel holes in one of the sleeves. He had retired from the Flint Journal after 33 years working as a pressman. About 6 months after the Flint Journal article he was in the paper again when an old woman from New Zealand called one of his sons and said she was Carl's first girlfriend. She sent a picture to the Flint Journal where it was published. Carl died of renal failure.

Carl married Mary Jane Reynolds on 26 May 1948. The marriage ended in divorce in Jun 1974. (Mary Jane Reynolds was born on 5 Jun 1926 in Stewartsville, Posey, Indiana.)

Carl next married Fern Ann Hernandez in 1978 in Flint, Genesee, Michigan.
