Elizabeth Potts Pringle's family lived on a large estate toward the northern part of England. At the age of 12 she was apprenticed to another estate as a cook. She remained there for about 13 years until her marriage to Robert James Welsh in 1875. At that time, she was then head cook of either 7 or 8 cooks there. Apparently the estate was large as the would entertain 40-50 guests for a weekend. Her recollection was that the estate took very good care of all their people. Food was furnished as well as a house plus a small yearly sum. If a member of the household were ill, the wife of the lord would go out to visit them. After the family seniors or parents were too old to work they stayed on, still being taken caare of by the estate, with their children who also worked for the estate. This was related through Elizabeth Potts Pringle Welsh to her grandson Edward Nelson Welsh when his grandparents went to Peterborough Canada in 1913.

Elizabeth married Robert James Welsh on 10 Jun 1875 in Columus Church, Belford, England. (Robert James Welsh was born on 18 Jul 1848 in Seahouses, Sunderland, England, died on 22 Feb 1919 in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and was buried in Peterborough Cemetery, Ontario.)
