Ralph Avery Obituary: "Ralph Avery, who had been ill with pneumonia for some ten days, passed away at his farm home in Macon Tuesday afternoon. His wife, who was Eula Underwood, has been seriously ill with influenza, but is some better. Mr. Avery, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Avery of Macon, was 26 years of age and well known and highly respected. ...This death is the third in the immediate family of Cyrus Underwood in three months."
(note: The great influenza pandemic of 1918 was raging at this time. The hometown paper, the Tecumseh Herald was full with deaths from this illness, which struck young and old alike. Fatalities from this strain of flu usually came from its major complication, pneumonia.)
