Incumbent Democrat Herb Makima is being challenged in the 1st Commission District by Republican Walter Humphrey, while Commissioner Denise Tryban, a Democrat, and Republican Dennis Hutchinson are vying for the 6th District seat.

Herb Makima was also Vice President of the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments.

Herbert I. Makima, 87, of Cheboygan, passed away Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 at home.
Herbert was born on Jan. 9, 1930 in Mass City, Mich., the son of Ivar and Lempi (Kovanan) Makima.

On Aug. 12, 1950 he married Florence Koski in Detroit, living there and Garden City for 19 years, before moving to Cheboygan in 1969. He was a Cheboygan business owner for over 40 years, an 18 year Cheboygan County Commissioner and former chairman, a 48 year member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, a life member and past master, 32 degree, of the Masonic Lodge, a past patron and life member of the Eastern Star, a life member and past president of the Cheboygan Lion's Club, a member of the Cheboygan Dad's Club, and a Boy's Club of America Leader.

Surviving are four children, Mark (Terry Ann) Makima of Cheboygan, Terry Rae (Makima) Kirkpatrick of Crystal Falls, Robert (Julie) Makimaa of Cheboygan, and David Makima of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Michael (Tina Lail) Jewell, Kevin Jewell, Danielle (Doug) Makima Beebe, Micah Makima, Courtney (Joe) Makima Badgley, Casey (Erik) Makimaa Johnson, and Herbert (Heyde Ortiz Arquinigo) Makimaa; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence and nine siblings, Irene Laker, Mildred Pipgras, Vera Crown, Harold Bill Makima, Rudolf Makima, George Makima, Helen Stucky, Eleanor Henry, and Evelyn Mattson.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 at 11 a.m., with the family greeting friends beginning at 10 a.m., at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Rev. David Hueter will officiate, burial will be at Pinehill Cemetery.
