Barbara N. Stein
Died May 3, 2005

TRAVERSE CITY - Barbara Nixon Stein, 80, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, as the result of an automobile accident.

Barbara was born in Grosse Pointe on Feb. 1, 1925, the daughter of Gladys M. (Stover) and Floyd Sherman Nixon. Following graduation from high school, Barbara attended the University of Michigan, studying biology. She married James E. Stein on March 15, 1945, in San Diego, Calif.

Formerly of Fife Lake and Romeo, Mrs. Stein had lived in the Traverse City area since 1998, moving here with her husband. They spent their winters in Hudson and Weeki Wachee, Fla. It was in Romeo where they raised their 10 children.

Mrs. Stein was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Florida Frontiersman Reenactment Group and the Power Squadron. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Mancelona, and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Armada, where she served as the choir director and was a member of the Altar Guild, caring for all of the linens of the church.

She enjoyed playing the piano and the hammer dulcimer and loved all sorts of outdoor activities, especially swimming. She also enjoyed knitting, gardening and reading. Most of all, she enjoyed family outings and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Mrs. Stein is survived by her children, James H. (Barbara) Stein of Ortonville, Peter (Susan) Stein of Wake Forest, N.C., Carol (Ron) Schmidt of Oscoda, Joan (Phil) Cole of Charlotte, N.C., David (Jill) Stein of Troy, Christopher (Mary Beth) Stein of Traverse City, Donald (Joanne) Stein of Almont, Douglas (Mary) Stein of Oxford, Jeanette Stein Almas of Livonia and Matthew (Andrea) Stein of St. Clair Shores. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren.

Mrs. Stein was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James on Oct. 23, 2003; and by a brother and sister, Floyd Nixon Jr. and Caroline Piper.

Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday, May 6, from 5 until 8 p.m. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation will continue on Sunday, May 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, 11280 32 Mile Road, in Romeo.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richmond (Armada), with The Rev. Fr. Michael Goldade serving as celebrant. Burial will immediately follow the Mass in Romeo Cemetery.
